Preventing falls on construction sites

On Behalf of | Mar 4, 2022 | Workers' Compensation |

Across the year, there are always numerous construction projects going on across Fairfax, Virginia. While this is good news in terms of jobs and development for the area, there are some drawbacks.

Even the safest building sites contain some safety hazards. Sites that take a more lax approach to health and safety can be even more dangerous.

Slip-and-fall accidents are one of the more common forms of accidents that occur in the construction sector. In fact, slips, trips and falls are so dangerous that only auto accidents cause more accidental deaths each year. Outlined below are some safety practices that may help to prevent falls on construction sites

Increase visibility

It goes without saying that visibility is a key to safety in all areas. To stop yourself from falling, you need to be able to see what you are doing. Not all building sites have the benefit of the sun’s rays to keep them well-litten. Some projects are carried out underground or in darker areas. In such locations, it is pivotal that adequate lighting is installed. This makes it easier for workers to see what they are doing and they might also spot any potential hazards before it’s too late.

Fencing off unsecured areas

Some areas on construction sites are simply not safe for workers to access. If these areas are not marked with clear signage or fenced off, then how are people supposed to know that danger is present? It should be made clear that employees are to avoid such areas until specialist work has been carried out to make the location safe. Not guarding unsafe areas significantly increases the risk of a fall from a height.

Good housekeeping can go a long way to preventing slips, trips and falls. This means keeping walkways clear, workspaces well-lit and disposing of hazardous waste. If you have been injured in a fall on a construction site, make sure you explore the various legal options open to you.
